Having a healthy mouth is very important! Our teeth play such an important role in our everyday lives. They help us to eat and speak properly as well as give the structure of our facial shape.  Good dental practices encourage patients to have good oral health! Such as daily brushing and flossing, are the two main factors in maintaining proper oral health as an adult.

If you are looking for new ways to improve your smile and prevent dental long-term issues, it is essential to have a regular dental check-up with your local dentist. At Woburn Sands Dental Practice, our dentists will always encourage all of our patients to have the best oral health possible. We will always be ready to give you any advice or assistance in order to help you achieve it.

We’ve completed a helpful list of how to keep your teeth clean at home and why it is important. Check out our seven helpful tips on how to maintain good dental hygiene!

Tip 1: Don’t Brush Aggressively!

As you know you need to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes. Brushing too hard will damage your gum tissues and can wear away your tooth enamel, which will lead to gum diseases or even cavities. We recommend to all of our patients that you need to use a soft-bristled toothbrush with fluoride and limit their brushing time to avoid overbrushing. Most dentists will recommend going in a circular motion when brushing, instead of going back and forth motion. This can damage your gums, if you have gum issues we recommend talking to your dentist about the proper techniques in order to help you.

Tip 2: Cut Down On Sugar

Everybody loves a bit of sugar sometimes, who doesn’t right? However if you have a lot of sugar intake it can also cause weight gain, and heart disease and could lead to heart conditions. If you want to avoid having bad breath and want a healthy smile, it is crucial to cut back on sugary foods and drinks. If there’s any question as to whether or not there is something high in sugar or if it tastes too sweet there is a high chance there is a lot of sugar. You are allowed to have sugar and also eat healthy you will just need to balance it and keep an eye on the amount of sugar you have.

Tip 3: Do Not Smoke

Tip three is to understand that smoking can lead to bad breath and poor oral health, as well as staining your teeth and increasing the percentage of the risk of gum disease. These will then lead to poor dental hygiene which you don’t want. If you want to have a white pearl smile and are steering clear of tobacco products. Instead, an alternative method is to try chewing some cinnamon sticks or even peppermint as both are known to help your breath smell fresher.

If you do not smoke, don’t be discouraged. There is a range of ways to get that fresh breath feeling. Having a diet that is rich in vitamin c is also essential for their gums to keep healthy. Have lemons and oranges as they have the highest percentage of vitamin c. Chewing sugarless gum after meals will stimulate saliva production, which will then wash away the food particles within the teeth.

Tip 4: Always Make Sure You Floss!

A lot of people underestimate how important flossing is. Flossing is more important than brushing your teeth for preventing any cavities and gum diseases. When you floss you remove all of the plaque that is building up and other food debris that might have made its way between the teeth. As a result, flossing prevents bad breath and fewer cavities. We will always recommend to all of our patients to floss daily to help with tooth decay and infections.

Tip 5: Be Aware Of How Much You Snack

Snacking isn’t harmful to your teeth. There are always good alternative ways to keep hunger at bay and meet your body’s energy needs between meals. The problem is that a lot of people snack on foods that aren’t very healthy for them or they have too much. If you have a nighttime craving the best way to stay healthy and satisfy them is with fruit or vegetables rather than junk food.

Tip 6: See Your Dentist  Twice A Year

It is important to visit your dentist twice a year! During that time you should get a full mouth exam as well as professional cleaning. These general checkups will ensure that you have good dental hygiene, especially because most cavities develop a surface that isn’t easily seen by patients. This schedule may vary depending on your dental needs, but it is a great place to start. Make an appointment with us today!

Tip 7: Have A Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

If you have or are using a hard-bristled toothbrush, for a while now is the time to change it up before it is too late. You will need to invest in a medium and firm bristle, because you may think you are doing a great job cleaning your teeth but in reality, you ain’t. Now is the time to look for new toothbrushes that have a soft bristle that is made from natural or silicon rubber. You can also choose a toothbrush that has smaller bristles to reach
